When I spoke to the nurse on the phone this morning she told me Emma had been doing well overnight and the doctors are talking about starting her feeding today AND weaning her from the breathing apparatus!!!
This is so encouraging and exciting, yet we all need to contain ourselves!! ;-)
The feeding process will begin with just a few millilitres of milk each time and then a wait to see if she tolerates it. They will only increase the amounts when they are sure her stomach is able to cope, and the bowels do their job.
With weaning her from the canula, they will slowly decrease the pressure that is helping to keep her airway open. She needs extra strength in her tongue and throat to do it herself. In the meantime it is important that she does not have any episodes, where her tongue blocks the airway. While she still does that they can not let her come home. so far she has not had any, but while holding her yesterday I noticed that she does momentarily stop taking breath and then starts again.
