Happy New Year!!

For many years I have felt the pressure to make New Year's Eve a big event.  We either needed to go somewhere, do something or celebrate somehow.

But this year has been different.  It just didn't seem like such a big deal!  Then I realized why.  So much is made of the new year as a "do-over", second chance, time for change.  While 2014 came with its challenges, I just don't feel the need to start over!

It's a wonderful place to be, recognizing the blessing of where you are, instead of wishing things were different!  I couldn't imagine a more perfect-for-me husband, and the kids are truly a blessing.  We have new goals for the next year, dreams and prayers, toward growth and progression.  We aren't worried about fixing mistakes!

We weren't planning on doing anything, but some friends invited us to stop by their party.  Scotts parents kindly agreed to watch the kids for a bit, and we went, but were all home by 9:30pm, and asleep way before midnight!

It might not be the wild night others look for, but we'll be up with the kids, hitting the Wii early no doubt, and that is quality time!

Next year, maybe we'll make it to England for the Florida reunion!!

Flashback!

Looking through old files I found this log from the day I went in to be induced with Toby!  Kind of funny to look back on it now, 5 years later.  I do however remember not being able to get online, and how frustrating it was!!

The longest day

We all got up at 6am to get ready.  Grandma Ellen and Pops arrived at 6.20am and Emma was all set for a day of fun!  She couldn’t have cared less as I tried to cuddle on her for a few minutes.  When Scott told her to give me a big squeeze she hugged me, putting a hand on each shoulder and preceded to squeeze my shoulders!!

Scott and I headed to the hospital, got checked in and strapped to the monitors for a few minutes.  The baby looked good and started moving around right away.  I was quite relieved since he’d been quiet all morning.  We took a quick walk around, peeked at the babies in the nursery and contemplated how strange it will be to have a newborn at home.  We can’t wait to see how Emma is with him – and are thankful she is so gentle with things!!

Then we waited for the midwife to turn-up!

We tried to get online many times, even had the hospital techy look at the laptop and we can’t get it to pick up the network.  (Scott is posting this from home!)  That is one of the biggest frustrations – my connection to the outside world!!

There are a few options for inducing labor and we opted to go for one that worked on contractions and cervix ripening.  It’s such a drag to not know if they will work, or how long it might be before labor even begins, let alone ends in delivery!!  God willing the whole process won’t be too long, whatever that means.

It’s hard not knowing how long I’ll be away from Emma.  If it looks like I’ll be here all night I labor we planned for Scott to go home and put Emma to bed so she doesn’t have to wonder where we both are.

Within two hours of arriving at the hospital our nurse, Jean and midwife, Sarah, had us sharing the story of how we met and also telling about Emma.  It makes everything worthwhile when you are able to share the goodness of God with the people around you!

By the time I ate lunch I’d had two doses of the labor inducing drug, with on very occasional cramping, no contractions or discernible changes.  The midwife didn’t see the point in checking me until I started contracting.

In the meantime I struggled with boredom and restlessness.  Being stuck in a hospital bed with very little to do!  Scott was great though, and kept giving me foot massages.

I watched a couple episodes of Baby Story and one had a woman in labor for over 24 hours.  It was not encouraging to me!!

Before the third (increased) dose of meds I quizzed the midwife on what we are facing.  She said she figured something would have started by now. In fact, I have the longest cervix she has ever seen – not good when you’re trying to go into labor!!

Shortly afterwards though the contractions started coming, although they are still drug-induced!

So far the plan is to change to a different medication for overnight to finish the job on my cervix and/or kickstart me into labor.  That’s right, we’re expecting to go overnight and then start contraction meds in the morning if necessary.

They put the new stuff in at 6pm after I got checked again.  Something has been happening as I am 50% effaced and baby’s head is lower.  For now though, we’re still waiting for my body to take over the labor by itself.

It’s very difficult to not get discouraged.  I miss Emma so much, and had hoped (however delusionally) that she might be able to visit her new brother today!  Hah!

Instead Scott is going home and spend an hour or two with her before bedtime.  Tomorrow I will need to see her!  I haven’t spent more than 24hours away from her since November last year, and that was torture!  With any luck things will get going before hand!

Want to help? Turn up the volume on those prayers, please!!!

Christmas 2014...in pictures!

Before church on Christmas Eve, this was the best I could get!

And new pjs - our tradition!

Christmas Day...
First up, opening stocking gifts on our bed - carrying on a tradition from when I was little and we would open our stockings on Mum and Dad's bed!

Hulk costume!

Princess toothbrushes - she was really excited!

This was a tough guy face for the Spiderman toothbrush!

Leopard print tights - you have no idea how nuts she went about these!

A wedding bouquet, ring and veil!

Then downstairs for the tree gifts, that the kids had been looking at since Saturday!  Kudos for their self-control!!

Emma got Toby a mini skateboard!

A Frozen nightgown - can you see the excitement?!

Bow and arrows!  Suction of course!

She has yet to take it off!

Boys and clothes!

Legos!

A scooter!  Apparently though, he's scared to try it!!

A microphone with speaker for our little performer!

Scott also surprised me with some gifts, which I loved!  He knows me so well.

And we were done by 8:30am!

Then it's time to play!

Scott and I got the kids a Wii, for the kids, you know!

I've made quite the village for the kids.  I give it 3 days before it's destroyed!  Toby still has to put his big one together.

We got some new ornaments in our stockings!

My sister sent four of these over, which I was thrilled about!  And I got a Union Jack umbrella from my Mum!

I made pork, roast chicken and roast spuds for dinner, and they came out great!  I forgot to do veggies, but nobody cared!

We had a lovely day, even though Toby got sick Christmas Eve night, and Emma got up at 4am (and every half hour until 6ish) too excited to go back to sleep!

The Christmas Story

We may not be spending Christmas with our family in "England world" (hahaha!), but, thnaks to Skype, the kids still get to "see" them and share moments with them.

Today, Emma wanted to read to Grandma and Grandad, the Christmas Story!

She just kept going, without a pause, even with Toby and I playing catch over her!  When I asked her if she was going to read the entire New Testament, she said she was "going to stop at John the baptist"!

I couldn't help but be so proud of how well she reads, but more than that, just how well she is able to speak - for which I give all praise to God!  So I asked her to let me video her reading it, which she was thrilled with!

When she was done (after her awesome ending comment!) she said "we'll do another one at Easter, right?  About how Jesus died on the cross."

Dance with me

Last night, as we got the kids ready for bed, Emma looked up to Scott and said "just one dance before bed daddy?"  He's such a great dad, that he rarely says no to a dance with his little princess, so he followed her into her room, as she told him not to forget to spinner and dip her!

And right there, they had a moment. The movement, that I imagine she will always remember, along with all the other dances they've had.

It melts my heart every time!  And I can only pray that, when she starts to look for a husband (when she's 30 or so!!) that she will seek out the qualities that she's seen in her Daddy.  While I'm sure it would be tough to find a man that treasures her so much, we hope that she will realize her worth and love like none other.

Messy Christmas

This one may seem familiar, but PB asked Scott to perform this skit again, today.  So, here it is - "He Came To Get Messy"...

Peace and joy

Kids got home from school and toby asked Em if she wanted to color with him downstairs!

Benjamin was happy to have company too!  And the rest of the house is nice and quiet!!

Petition

Emma came home from school with what can only be described as a petition!!

Luckily I was way ahead of her and Auntie Nicola is giving her one for Christmas!!

Take 2

Toby's class "performed" the nativity during the Christmas show for the youngest kids in the school yesterday, but today they performed it for us, as well as singing some songs.  I was able to be there to video it for Scott, and you!!

If you recall, at the service last May, Toby refused to walk down the aisle by himself - today he did it himself - if not a little sheepishly!
(He's a camel!)

The rest of his class filtered in and then the kids who do school 3 days a week.  He was not smiling while he waited!

Then it was showtime!!

And then they did the nativity...

He did really well and I was very proud.  He's come a long way since the last performance and I think it has a lot to do with being in school 5 days, so he knows the other kids and teachers, as well as his best buddy, Kaylee (aka Mary)!
