A better day

Last night Scott and I stayed over at the hospital so that we could be on hand to stay with Emma if she became distressed. On the whole she stayed asleep, but because she likes to wave her arms around we had to cover them so she didn't hit the tube!

She had a good night and this morning they weaned her morphine by half. This meant she was awake more, but she was calm and not in pain.

The doctors decided to begin feeding her at noon using the g-tube. Before her second feed at 3pm they found that she had only digested 4ml of the 24ml she got at noon. They gave her another 3 hours and she digested a further 10ml.

At 6pm Emma was given another 24ml, so she had a total of 34ml to digest before 9pm. The nurse estimates that she digested all but about 5ml, so that is great!

This could be a slow process, after all she hasn't had to use her stomach for a couple months. The morphine will also affect the process, so hopefully she will improve as the meds are decreased further.

I'm sure you are eagerly awaiting news on Emma's airway issues. So are we! Right now she is on the high-flow canula and is also getting extra oxygen, so we don't know how she will fair back on the regular canula. She is getting the extra support because the morphine can relax a little too much, so we're making sure she is breathing effectively.

This afternoon I was able to hold Emma for over an hour. That's a long time given I couldn't change her position at all! She napped, she gazed at me, and she didn't cry or fidget! Clearly the morphine is doing it's job.

This week will be one of observation and patience - oh goody!! Seriously though, we'll take it a day at a time.

It sounds like Emma is progressing right on schedule. I bet you were both tired today!
We continue to pray for Emma's complete recovery and for the time we can see her in her beautiful striped nursery!!
