Nathan is hanging in there at the hospital. We visited him again last night and he was up and about the ward. It's pretty cool, they attach all his monitor wires to a small box that he wears in a backpack, so he is still monitored but not attached to the bed. He took us to the playroom where he seemed like the lively little guy we all love.
Peeking out of the top of his shirt you can now see the scar that runs from his collarbone to halfway down his chest. Apparently he has no wish to see it just yet. I can only imagine how itchy it must be, but he's doing pretty good at not bothering it, with the odd reminder!
Nathan has always been a big drinker. Even as an infant he could chug a bottle at light speed, seemingly not needing to breathe during a drink! Since his surgery they have had to force him to even sip a drink. Yesterday though he actually requested a drink, so that's a great sign of recovery.
It seems as though his heart is still taking it's sweet time to recover and the countdown is now on. If the regular rhythm does not return by Monday they will be fitting Nathan with an internal pacemaker which he will have to deal with the rest of his life. We are still praying that won't be necessary.
Christina tells me that his heart rate was in the 40's when he slept last night, and that actually made it difficult for him to sleep. It is only in the 60's when he's awake. (For comparison, Emma's rate is in the 70's when she is in a deep sleep, and in the low 100's when she is relaxed and awake.) However, because his blood pressure was fine they didn't intervene. Now both Christina and Nathan are sleep deprived!
