Today Emma had a speech therapy session. It's the first time in a month that Brooke, her therapist has seen her.
At our last session we introduced Emma to saying A, E, I, O and U. We were pretty impressed with how easily she made the sounds. Of course, Emma has been very verbal for some time and used varying sounds and inflection. We had even thought she made sounds close to the words for "all done", as well as Dada and Mama.
As you know on vacation she started saying "Uncle Scott" (and now calls "Scott" by name!), as well as things like up, down, off etc.
Brooke was blown away by Emma today. Not only the number of words she could articulate well, but also her confidence and willingness to repeat any of the words Brooke asked her to. In fact Emma said "bubble" very clearly, which surprised me!
I hadn't really stopped to consider just how great she's been doing with speech (distracted by the more obvious walking!), but in just a month she has really matured and come such a long way.
Brooke said that it has been documented that once children learn to walk their speech dramatically improves, so that fits! I wonder if it's because they really focus so hard on the walking that they ignore speech? just this morning Emma walked the length of the driveway and around the sidewalk in front of the house.
We also gave Emma some food while Brooke was here as she is also a feeding specialist. She also noticed the difference in Emma's eating. She has started to move her tongue out more to move the food around, and to the one side - this is a learned motion that babies pick up as they feed, Emma has to go through the same progression.
It has been an encouraging time!
