I love referring to my non-office days as "day off". It couldn't be farther from the truth given that they are more crazy and exhausting than days at my desk!
Yesterday started of with The annual review of Emma's therapy. 8:30am, with the principle, her teacher, service coordinator, physical therapist, occupational therapist and speech therapist, me and Toby!!
Luckily the room full of women he didn't know rendered Toby practically silent for the entire hour, and he sat still on my lap. He must've got that from Scott!
The review was great. She's advanced academically, doing great socially and they all commented on her friendliness and expressiveness.
Her teacher said she overheard Emma telling other kids that it's so important they come to church on Easter! (Turns out it was about our glow in the dark Easter egg hunt, more than the message of redemption!)
Her physical therapist is going to pair her up with a little boy called Gregory. He did Zumba with Emma for a few weeks and apparently they work very well together!
Then it was off to do errands with Toby.
I have exactly one hour from the time I collect Emma from school, until the time Toby starts school. That includes the drive home, prepare & eat lunch, then drive Toby to school! Possibly the craziest hour of my week.
After dropping Toby at school, it was time to take Emma to the dentist. She now has one of her top front adult teeth and it is massive! I wanted to check on things because I'm not sure how the teeth are going to fit in her mouth, and some other things.
Thankfully the dentist said there is nothing to worry about. The teeth will be over-crowded, but they have a great orthodontist who will be able to help them space out. It's also tough to clean her teeth because she has a small mouth, but she did not have any cavities which is awesome. Think about how your teeth would be if your tongue couldn't lick the front of your teeth, and your mouth was always open.
We are starting to work on good habits for Emma. She is increasingly putting her hand over how mouth when she chews. Ideally this would be all the time, but we are not militant about it - we don't want her to hate mealtimes because we are nagging her the whole time. Additionally, and more difficult is trying to get her to wipe her teeth after eating. Food collects along her gumline and congeals to where its stuck to her teeth. She doesn't seem to feel it, and her tongue can't get it, so she needs a napkin to wipe them.
These aren't a big deal, but I think little things can be big to others. We've all seen people with food in their teeth or stinky breath and it's off-putting. Especially when "snack-time" is given EVERYWHERE here! I rarely give the kids snacks at home, because a little snack can totally derail Toby's dinner.
The other evening Toby took two hours to eat dinner - and he only managed a few bites of chicken in that time, leaving sweet potato and broccoli too (things he'd normally eat). The only reason he pretended to keep trying was so he could get a yoghurt! He was upset when I put him to bed at 9pm without any dessert - by which point Emma had been asleep for some time having finished everything within a half hour! She'll eat as much as she can, which is a problem in itself!
Fun times! Lots of little things that you find out about raising kids along the way. Life is rarely at a stand still for long.
